The period from the end of April to the beginning of May is called GOLDEN WEEK because some national holidays are concentrated in this period.
SHOWA’s Day – April 29
Constitution Memorial Day – May 3
Greenery Day – May 4
Children’s Day – May 5
Besides them, there are 2 weekends around them, so it becomes long consecutive days off. In addition, some companies give the extra days off to their employees, so they can take longer ones.
For example, this year’s SHOWA’s Day is on Sunday (April 29), so the next day (April 30) is a substitute holiday.
Also Constitution Memorial Day is on Thursday, Greenery Day is on Friday, Children’s Day is Saturday.
So if May 1 and 2 are the days off, 9 consecutive days off are made – from April 28 (Saturday) to May 6 (Sunday).
Originally the movie industry began to the word “GOLDEN WEEK” because the profit rose in this period. Then this word spread to the other industries.
Everyone wants to go travelling in GOLDEN WEEK, so the costs for trains, airplanes, hotels are more expensive and tourist attractions are crowded.
So it is not good period to go travelling for me.
