We have two ways to express eras.

The Christian era is being applied in Japan, too. But we use Japanese original era at the same time. So it is complicated for foreigners. And it is complicated for us, too.
The current era name is HEISEI, so this year is HEISEI 29. It is expressed like “平成29年”, “H29” and so on.
So pay attention!! If you see 29 as for expression about the year, that doesn’t mean 2029- that means HEISEI 29 ( = 2017).
The era name is changed when the emperor changes and the number is reset.
